چکیده

6 We present a simple column model for studying the D-O cycles of the last glacial period, 7 based on the Nordic Ice Machine hypothesis presented by Dokken, et al (manuscript in 8 preparation). The model is comprised of ocean boxes stacked below a one-layer sea ice model 9 with an energy-balance atmosphere. Parameterizations are included for offshore polyñya 10 activity and sea ice export from the column. The resulting heuristic model was found to 11 cycle between stadial and interstadial states at times scales similar to those seen in the 12 proxy observational data, with the presence or absence of perennial sea ice in the Nordic 13 Seas being the defining characteristic for each of these states. The modelled oscillations 14 were found to be robust to parameter changes, including those related to the ocean heat flux 15 convergence (OHFC) into the column. Including natural variability in the OHFC increased 16 the robustness of the modelled oscillations. We conclude by discussing the implications of 17 such a hypothesis for the state of the Nordic Seas today, its state during the Last Glacial 18 Maximum, and other hypotheses that invoke large-scale changes in the Atlantic Meridional 19 Overturning Circulation for explaining millennial scale variability in the climate system. An 20 extensive time scale analysis will be presented in Part II. 21

A Heuristic Model of Dansgaard–Oeschger Cycles. Part I: Description, Results, and Sensitivity Studies

A simple model for studying the Dansgaard–Oeschger (D-O) cycles of the last glacial period is presented, based on the T. Dokken et al. hypothesis for D-O cycles. The model is a column model representing the Nordic seas and is composed of ocean boxes stacked below a one-layer sea ice model with an energy-balance atmosphere; no changes in the large-scale ocean overturning circulation are invoked....

Coherent Resonant Millennial-Scale Climate Oscillations Triggered by Massive Meltwater Pulses

The role of mean and stochastic freshwater forcing on the generation of millennial-scale climate variability in the North Atlantic is studied using a low-order coupled atmosphere–ocean–sea ice model. It is shown that millennial-scale oscillations can be excited stochastically, when the North Atlantic Ocean is fresh enough. This finding is used in order to interpret the aftermath of massive iceb...

A two‐parameter stochastic process for Dansgaard‐Oeschger events

[1] Various climatic processes are thought to evolve as rapid, shift‐like events, which points at the presence of nonlinear dynamics. Time series analysis of nonlinear processes, however, is not trivial, for example, because of the difficulty in coming up with a realistic random process as a viable null hypothesis. In this methodology paper we construct a basic two‐parameter process of shift‐li...

Can North Atlantic Sea Ice Anomalies Account for Dansgaard–Oeschger Climate Signals?*

North Atlantic sea ice anomalies are thought to play an important role in the abrupt Dansgaard–Oeschger (D–O) cycles of the last glacial period. This model study investigates the impacts of changes in North Atlantic sea ice extent in glacial climates to help provide geographical constraints on their involvement in D–O cycles. Based on a coupled climate model simulation of the Last Glacial Maxim...

A new mechanism for Dansgaard-Oeschger cycles

[1] We present a new hypothesis to explain the millennial-scale temperature variability recorded in ice cores known as Dansgaard-Oeschger (DO) cycles. We propose that an ice shelf acted in concert with sea ice to set the slow and fast timescales of the DO cycle, respectively. The abrupt warming at the onset of a cycle is caused by the rapid retreat of sea ice after the collapse of an ice shelf....
